Is Insulated Siding Worth It on a Metairie Home?

Written by Turnkey Siding

Key Takeaways

  • Insulated siding is worth it on a Metairie home when you’re already replacing vinyl and want a stiffer, quieter, more comfortable wall. It isn’t worth it as a stand-alone plan to slash your power bill.
  • National cost guides put insulated vinyl at $6 to $12 per square foot installed (HomeGuide) and about $3 to $4 per square foot more than standard vinyl material (This Old House, updated June 2026).
  • The foam backing adds a modest R-value. The ASTM standard for insulated vinyl sets a floor of R-2.0, and federally funded research puts current products at R-2 to R-3 at best.
  • If you want more insulation than that, the other route is rigid foam board installed under new siding of any type.

Is It Worth Getting Insulated Siding on a Metairie Home?

Quick Answer: For most Metairie homeowners who are already replacing old siding, insulated vinyl is worth a look, but the payoff is a stiffer, quieter, more comfortable wall more than a big drop in your electric bill. If your main goal is lower cooling costs on your Metairie home, attic insulation and air sealing usually come first.

We get this question a lot from owners of older Metairie homes who aren’t sure how much insulation sits inside their walls. Our earlier post on whether insulated siding lowers Louisiana energy bills covers how the foam works against heat. This one stays on the money side: what it costs and which insulated option makes the most sense for your house.

How Much Does Insulated Siding Cost?

National cost guides don’t publish Metairie prices, so treat these as a starting band, not a quote:

  • Installed price: HomeGuide lists insulated vinyl at $6 to $12 per square foot installed.
  • The premium over standard vinyl: This Old House, in its vinyl siding cost guide updated June 2026, says insulated vinyl adds about $3 to $4 per square foot on average on top of standard siding materials.
  • Tear-off: This Old House lists removal of old siding at an extra $1 to $2 per square foot.
  • What’s under the old siding: rotten sheathing gets fixed before anything new goes up, and nobody can price that until the wall is open.

Here’s an example for illustration only. If your house has 1,500 square feet of wall, a $3 to $4 premium works out to roughly $4,500 to $6,000 more than standard vinyl. That’s the number to weigh against what the foam gives you back. Our siding cost guide for New Orleans lays out how every material compares, and our siding financing guide covers ways to spread the cost.

What Do You Actually Get for the Extra Money?

Insulated vinyl is a vinyl panel with rigid foam bonded to the back. The foam does four things a hollow panel can’t:

  • A little added R-value. ASTM D7793, the standard for insulated vinyl siding, requires a thermal value of R-2.0 or greater. A 2023 research summary funded by the U.S. Department of Energy says current products reach R-2 to R-3 at best with expanded polystyrene foam.
  • A stiffer wall. The foam backing fills the gap behind the panel, so it lies flatter against the wall.
  • Coverage over the studs. Because the foam runs across the whole wall, it covers the wood framing that cavity insulation can’t reach.

R-2 to R-3 is real, but it’s modest next to what’s inside a typical insulated wall. That’s why we tell people not to buy insulated siding on a promised savings percentage. Many of the savings figures you’ll find online are about heating in cold climates. Fixr’s 2026 siding cost guide, for example, cites heating savings of 7% to 8% in cold climates. Metairie is the opposite problem: long, humid cooling seasons.

When Is Insulated Siding Worth It in Metairie, and When Isn’t It?

Metairie sits in Jefferson Parish between New Orleans and Lake Pontchartrain. The lake is brackish, so the issue here is humidity, not salt. Walls stay damp for long stretches, and summer sun works on the south and west sides for months. With that in mind, here’s how we think about it.

It usually makes sense when

  • You’re replacing vinyl anyway, so the premium is the only new money.
  • The walls are older and uneven, and you want panels that lie flat.
  • You plan to stay long enough to enjoy the comfort and the quieter rooms.
  • Your attic and ducts are already in decent shape, so the walls are the next weak spot.

It’s harder to justify when

  • Your existing siding is sound and you’d be replacing it only for energy savings.
  • The attic is under-insulated or the ducts leak, since those usually cost you more.
  • You’re selling soon and the buyer won’t pay for a feature they can’t see.
  • The house needs a different material entirely, like fiber cement or real wood. Our guide on whether wood siding is worth it in Louisiana covers the wood side.

Moisture belongs in the conversation too. Foam-backed siding still needs a proper water-resistive barrier and flashing behind it, the same as any cladding. Our guide on how Louisiana humidity damages siding explains why that layer matters more here than the foam does.

What Is the Best Insulated Exterior Siding Option?

There are really two ways to get insulation into a siding job, and the right one depends on the material you want on the outside.

Insulated vinyl

The same DOE-funded research notes that insulated vinyl is the only widely available product that combines siding and insulation in one piece. It’s the simplest route if you like vinyl. The Louisiana residential code, which adopts the 2021 IRC with amendments, requires insulated vinyl siding to comply with ASTM D7793, so ask your installer to confirm the product meets it.

Any siding over rigid foam board

If you want fiber cement, wood, or metal, the insulation goes under the siding as a layer of rigid foam board. Fixr’s 2026 guide lists adding rigid foam insulation behind siding as an energy upgrade option. This route can add more insulation than foam-backed vinyl, but it also thickens the wall, so window and door trim need extra detailing. Our fiber cement vs vinyl comparison helps if you’re torn on the outer material, and our guide to the best siding materials for Louisiana covers the rest.

Either way, the siding still has to hold up in storm season. Our post on wind-rated siding and Jefferson Parish codes explains what to ask about wind ratings and fastening before you sign.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does insulated siding cost more to install than regular vinyl?

Yes. The panels cost more, and they’re thicker, so cutting and trim work take a bit longer. National guides peg the material premium at about $3 to $4 per square foot.

Can insulated siding go over my old siding?

Sometimes, but we’d rather see what’s underneath first. Our post on installing new siding over old siding explains why tear-off is usually the safer call here.

Does Turnkey Siding install insulated siding in Metairie?

Yes. See our insulated siding page for Metairie for the options we carry.
